But, wouldn't it be non-productive to start a project without knowing what it is you want to accomplish?

Why websites fail? The failure of most websites on the internet is from lack of planning.

Here is how it goes for 95% of websites on the World Wide Web:

  • You have an idea and the passion to build your own web site.

  • You pick a great domain name.

  • You find a cheap or free hosting account.

  • You put up some pictures and write a paragraph or two about your company.

  • No ones visits your site.

  • You lose interest and motivation to continue.

  • The end.

Plan to succeed by taking steps, defining goals, and be prepared for your success.

More about website design steps

Content - is what every one on the internet is looking to find. You use the internet to get information and after getting the information, you decide what to buy and where to buy it. For the hobbyist, you search for information on how to do-it-yourself or what you will need or for places to talk and interact about your passion.

Content is the fuel that drives the World Wide Web. The internet is all about words and how you use them.

Goal - design your website with a goal or purpose in mind. What are you trying to say? Who are you trying to say it to? What are you 'selling'? Who are your competitors?

Set goals so you can measure your true success. Wanting people to visit my site is NOT a goal. Wanting 50 visits per day within the next 120 days is a goal.

Giving your goal a time frame makes it possible for you to monitor and adjust; try something different to achieve the goal or change the goal if it's too big to accomplish within the time frame.

Goals help to keep your website design focused and motivate you to perform over time.

WebPage Structure - is the page layout. How many columns? Navigational buttons on top or side?

You see a site and you like 'the feel' or 'look'. You want your WebPage structure to follow that layout. I like navigational buttons (home, about us, etc.) on the top and one column WebPages. What is your preference?

Content Management - is how you edit, add, move or delete your content, usually with the help of software like DreamWeaver or WordPress. FrontPage is another content management system. You can hire a content management agency or do it yourself with the use of software tools.

TIP: Website builders come free with most hosting packages and have basic web design tools to manage your content.

Domain Name - is the address or URL of your website. It's like your phone number. I can dial you up by putting your URL into my browser. There are hundreds of articles with suggestions on how to choose a domain name.

Basically, your name should include a single word description of your business, hobby or passion.

Hosting your Domain - if your domain name is like a phone number, you'll need to choose a phone company to handle your calls.

Your hosting account is your phone operator and directs all your calls to your WebPage. You have to have a hosting account to get onto the World Wide Web.

Your host is the only way your website can communicate with other websites on the internet.

Graphic designs - are the pictures, background and other images you find on a website. There are hundreds of thousands of free graphic designs. Your logo is a graphic.

You can build one yourself with a program like Photoshop.

There are also free online logo design makers. You can purchase an exclusive and unique design from a professional.

Maintaining and Updating your website: Sometimes something goes wrong. Who or how will you get your website design 'fixed'? Is there support available for the do-it-yourselfer?

TIP: Advances in the hosting industry have made it 99.99% reliable. Automatic security updates, locked domain transfer codes.

Keep your passwords secure and you'll have no troubles keeping your WebPages up and running smoothly.

Measuring success - You measure your success by comparing your performance to the goal you set. You adjust, modify or change as needed to make sure you hit your goal.

Be careful comparing your website design to others. They may not have the same goals as you. Measure your success by monitoring your website design goal.

Update your content - The most effective way to update your website content is add WebPages to your web site on a regular basis. Content is the fuel that runs the internet. It also runs your website design so add gas to keep it running.

TIP: Set a goal to have 100 pages of content within a year of going online. The more content the better.

Public Domain Movies

You may not plan on becoming a famous movie director, but you still have a use for public domain movies, broadcasts, commercials, and sound bites. These can be used on websites, or to create CD's or DVD's that you can sell.

By far, Buyout Footage at http://www.buyoutfootage.com/pages/pd.html is one of the hottest places to obtain movies. There is also great film that you can use at http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger and also at The Library of Congress at http://www.loc.gov/rr/mopic/.

At the Live Music Archive at Archive.org, which is located at http://www.archive.org/details/etree you can find movies of live music shows. You can also find free footage at the UCLA Film and Television Archive which is located at http://cinema.library.ucla.edu/.

While these are excellent sources for finding public domain movies, it is important to realize that you must purchase the work from most of these sources, with the exception of the public domain works found at Archive.org. However, the fee may be well worth it depending on what you intend to do with the film that you want.

There are various ways that you can use old film, broadcasts, and commercials for financial gain. You may want to use the entire work, or just use parts of it for your product. You could even make a collection of old commercials for an informative marketing course!

Again, you need to be aware of the format that the movie you want is delivered in, and make sure that you have the appropriate software or equipment to manipulate the movie to turn it into the product that you want it to be, if editing it is what you have in mind, or to transfer it to the medium that you want it to be on if you just want to change the delivery format. For instance, you may want to change something that is on video tape to DVD.

This information on public domain movies has been published for the benefit of all 'classics' seekers.

What is the Best Way to Advertise Online?

The most effective way to advertise online on the internet is to first setup a website and publish its domain name in major search directories like Google, yahoo and msn. More than 80% of users rely on these search directories to provide them with goods and services. These search engines and directories can also be termed as very large internet yellow pages.

Your website should include the generic keywords. If it does not contain the reliable and generic keywords then any one using such generic queries will not be able to discover or locate your website. Your domain name will be invisible and indiscoverable.

You should consider those simple algorithms which are duly observed and committed in designing of a website that are placed with various critical Meta tags. The Meta tags should contain the keywords that can surely promise to achieve high search engine presence and increase internet traffic to your website. The Meta tags strategies should be able to work well with the published WebPages at Google and yahoo.

When you design an extensive flash based website make sure to fill all the property entries like title, description and keywords. Failing to do so leaves no option for hard html or alt resource which is very necessary to be readily indexed by search engine robots. Consider the internet audience and their incoming setup. Flash pages takes too time to load up and analog users will not be able to load up and discontinue entering the site.

On the other hand non flash based websites relies on the hard text and is very easier to get indexed by search robots. Limit the use of stylized text saved as .gif, since as a graphic they are not indexed by search robots. Avoid use of frames as the search robots are not able to properly classify the textual material.

The ranking or search order takes place with Google and yahoo and begins with the title Meta tag. The title tag should not consist of more than 65 characters separated by commas. The title should describe in generic term the goods and services followed by location from which resource is located. The domain name which do not resemble with your title is not appropriate unless domains a reputed brand name.

Description should be between 25-30 words which best describes the products and services. Keywords can be limited to 15-16 that can be plural and compound in nature. Avoid multiple entries defined as repeating of keywords These when discovered can be reported to Google spamreport.com and result in elimination of your website from search directories.

Remember that high web presence can be achieved by proper web design and placement of relevant Meta tags according to Google publication guidelines. Thus the best way is to have different kind of advertisement sources to test out and see which one gets you the best response.

Is a Hyphenated Dot-Com Better Than a Clean Dot-Net?

What makes for a better domain name, a hyphenated dot-com like "Cheap-Domains.Com" or a "clean" dot-net name like "CheapDomains.Net" with no hyphen? To find the answer you first have to ask yourself what "better" means in this instance. Better for what? What do you plan to do with the domain?

Are you just planning to register and park it with hopes that people will stumble across it by accident and hit on an ad or two? If that's the case than forget the hyphen; people aren't in the habit of typing hyphens in the address block and you won't see much traffic. But keep the dot-com if you can; dot-nets aren't exactly second nature for address-block typists in the real world either.

Planning to auction it off with hopes of a high price? In that case the hyphen will probably weigh it down; for better or worse, the people who make the market in domain names have decided that hyphens are a negative influence on price. A dot-com is usually preferred; but burden it with a hyphen and the same domain name with a dot-net would be much better.

Or maybe you're planning to build your business website around the domain name? If that's the case than be careful with the hyphenated name. If you have to use a hyphen that means somebody else already has the clean dot-com and you don't want to do his advertising for him; he will likely get the most benefit from address-block searchers. It's possible to run afoul of the trademark laws too; a name like I-B-M might cost more in legal fees than you could ever hope to make with it. Go with the dot-net or even a dot-biz or dot-bz.

Alternatives to Stock Market Investing

The recent downturn in the stock market has caused many investors to look "outside the box" at alternative investments. Not all of these different types of investments can be compiled into your 401k plan, but they are worth looking at.

PRECIOUS METALS:

One of the most reliable safe-havens for your money is precious metals. Gold has long been the standard repository for stashing investment funds. During the Great Depression, President Roosevelt actually made it illegal to hoard gold because people were buying large amounts of the shiny stuff, which hurt the U.S. Dollar. Gold sells at a high premium compared to other metals, such as silver and copper. Gold hit an all-time high around 1980, and it has never eclipsed that peak until 2008, when it surged over $1,000 per ounce. Today, gold is back into triple digits, and given the recent bank collapses and unreliability of the American Dollar, this may be the last chance to see these prices for a long time. Check Nymex.com for current precious metal prices.

There are several ways to invest in precious metals. One is to go down to your local pawn shop or gold dealer and actually purchase coins, bars or other objects made of the desired material. Another method of investing in precious metals is buying shares of mutual funds or other securities that fluctuate with commodity prices. For instance, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) currently trades at around $90 per share, and seeks to closely track the price of gold.

For those who can't stomach the price of gold, silver and copper are priced much lower than gold, and are used in many industrial applications around the world. Some commodities experts are predicting that silver will outpace gold's return in the coming years due to silver price suppression in the past.

LAND:

Even though Real Estate prices have generally dropped across the United States, the same can not be said for land prices. Homes have lost up to 20% of their value in the last couple of years as supply outpaced demand. However, land is still very much a desired commodity. It's usually very expensive to buy large parcels of land in populated communities, but good deals can still be easily found in uncivilized areas. One good thing about investing in land is that due to the ever-increasing population, usable land will continue to become more scarce. One good website for finding cheap land bargains is Land Bazaar, which shows land for sale listings by state. There can be many formidable aspects to buying land, so be sure to due your own due diligence when purchasing any property.

INTERNET DOMAIN NAMES:

Investing in domain names is a relatively new phenomenon, with the first domain names having been created only 20 years ago. While it's true that most of the "best" domain names were snatched up in the 1990's, many domains are still purchased and then "flipped" for many times the value of the original investment. One way to start in domaining is to search for unregistered domains using a registrar like GoDaddy or Moniker. It's a good idea to concentrate on .com domains, as they have traditionally held their value better than the other domain extensions (such as .net or .mobi). Another tip for novice domainers is to search for domains inside a niche that one is familiar with, such as auto parts or mystery novels.

A great website that frequently produces lists of unregistered domains is Domain Bagger. Also visit the various Domain Name forums, such as Dnforum.com or Namepros. You'll find a wealth of information there.

Get Thousands of Free Hits With YouTube

Many people mistakenly believe that once a website goes live traffic will automatically come. Unfortunately, this is wishful thinking. If nothing is done to bring traffic to a website, chances are it will never get seen, despite it now being a part of the Web. Yet, webmasters don't have to fret, because with YouTube not only can they get thousands of free hits, but they can also have fun in the process.

So, what exactly is YouTube and how can you get traffic from it? YouTube is a website that allows members to share videos they have created. The content of these videos can be on virtually anything that is not violent or pornographic. In fact, even advertising is allowed, which is where the site's traffic-building possibilities come into play.

Yet, you don't want to make a blatant advertisement, since these types of videos are less likely to get views. Instead, you want to create a video giving information on a topic related to what you're selling. Then, at the end of the video, you can advertise your website. Make sure when you get to this point you use a URL that is short and memorable, since members won't have an opportunity to cut and paste your domain name into their browser. This means affiliate links and subdomains are out of the question. Of course, if all you have is an affiliate link or a subdomain, consider redirecting it to a more marketable domain name.

As far as creating the video, you can use Sony's Vegas Movie Studio. This program is not very expensive and works with most computers. To use it, you basically upload images or videos and manipulate them.

If you have no video, you can create one with images and a microphone. You can get the images from royalty-free photo sites, Microsoft Power Point, or you can take pictures yourself if you have the time and photography skills. Either way, as you are acquiring them, think ahead of time about how they're going to be presented in your video. You will want them to relate to what you're saying. For the best organization, consider writing a script before you find the images. That way you'll know what you need to look for ahead of time.

After you have uploaded your images into the program, read your script into your microphone. If you want you can even incorporate music into your program, though like your images, you will have to make sure they are royalty-free.

When you are finished with your video, you can upload it into your YouTube member account. From there, YouTube will take care of everything. If your video is interesting, people will watch it. Some may even incorporate it into their own websites, making your video even more visible.

To get more help in determining the flow of your content, look at other videos on YouTube. The most popular ones tend to be humorous, though there are others that get a lot of hits because they evoke a variety of emotions.
